A Sua Excelencia Armando Emílio Guebuza, Presidente da Republica de Moçambique
President Guebuza and his quite impressive title is visiting Alto Molocue today. The town has been quite preoccupied with prepping for his visit, hence, we have been able to make no progress the past three weeks on projects. He flew in with an armada of five helicopters (all piloted by South Africans) and landed at the airfield where we normally throw the frisbee. By my estimation, there were about 5,000 people there to greet him and we got pretty close to the action. I’ll also be posting a video of him greeting a crew of FRELIMO supporting youth in front of me at the airfield.
He was then driven to the grandstand next to the basketball court where he proceeded to give a speech. Before the speech he was presented as “O Pae do Povo Mozambicano” - ‘The father of the Mozambican People’. He presented the FRELIMO candidate for the 2014 Presidential Election. In my opinion his speech was more related to politics than the state of Mozambique. He did host a question and answer period where different community members took their turn asking questions. Nearly every question started with a praising of the work the President has done for Moz. In Moz, all of the questions are asked, then the leader (President Guebuza) gives a response to all of the questions, one by one. It’s a perfect format to make sure that no actual discussion of important topics occurs.
He is spending the night in the Administrador’s mansion (my sitemate Jesse’s house borders the compound.) We’re thinking of either ‘estou a pedir’ - ‘asking for’ some coal to cook with or giving him an ‘oferta’ - ‘offering’ of a 2M, one of Mozambique’s finest ales (equal in quality to a Natural Light). If you never hear from us again, it probably didn’t go over to well…
All in all, one of the more exciting days in Molocue history.
